Actually, the truth behind this is much more interesting than this emo crap. When you start falling asleep, your vital organs start functioning at a slower pace. The heart slows down the blood pumping and electrical synapses get sparse. Then you get a jolt of electrical impulses from the brain that startle you or make your leg kick, waking you up.

Why?

Because the brain cannot tell the difference between falling asleep and dying.

Both situations involve the same “symptoms”. Decreasing heart rate and brain functionality, relaxation of the muscle and vital organs.

When you kick or startle yourself conscious when half asleep, that’s your brain trying to keep you alive.

Damn.
